Milly J's Shlog Time

Hello Lovelies...

It is that time again. Shlog time. It was once called Blog time. However, knowing the husky toned, well heeled, creative merriment of the fans, Shlog seems more fitting. Think Scandinavian chic ... blog sounds too... blah.

Many updates have taken place since last time. From new shoes to meetings to exhibitions on the move. I will keep you guessing as to what you may think the next designs to be shown will be.

Though for now, I will tell you a little discussion I had with a fellow artist in America. Her name is 2cowgirls. well, actually it's Cynthia, but 2cowgirls fits her rodeo style mosaic art... beautiful pieces.

She wanted to get to know me which was very generous of her. Though she also wanted to understand my way of designing and creating. She wanted to know what I use, how I preserve the work. She told me that she had a pair of cowgirl boots she wanted to mosaic and use as a gift for someone who had sentimentality towards them. I thought hmm. However, in this industry, you cannot be selfish, but at the same time you want to be able have your own print on creations. It is like any art form.

So I told her:

all I can actually say and I genuinely say this from my heart and experience. YOU are an artist. You have you own way, skills and knowledge of doing things. Every artist is different, every artist must learn and every artist must try. Try in your own way. If it doesn't work, well at least you tried it.

I tentatively await her curses!

Branding With Milly J

Hello again Milly J's Shoe readers!

Milly J's Shoes (MJS) is back after a lovely restful Christmas time in Norfolk. Large roaring fires in the living room, cocktails with cocktail cherries, sugared mice and lots of warmth and love. How was yours?

Ahem... now it's time for Milly J to get serious for a bit... well, moderately so, so don't despair.

In this post we will be covering the importance of branding. Though I will not be preaching to you about the ins and outs and what is a necessity, as this is very personal from business to business.

Have you ever walked in to a boutique and really not known what was going on? Perhaps you felt a deep sense of disconnectedness or indifference, or maybe you couldn't put your finger on the lack of pulse. Or perhaps it was even down to the people hired.

When forming a business, I am not the most conventional. Though, I believe that this works to my favor... as my brand isn't conventional. However, branding is extremely important. If you know yourself, your goals, your achievements and your likes and dislikes, it does become a lot easier. It's really not as daunting as one may think.

Perhaps write down a list of things that makes you feel great, that remind you of your business, draw pictures, tell stories, write down big details and minute details, listen to music that sums up your business. Jot down as much as you can and make a scrap book of ideas.
A book helps, as it means that you can flip through your ideas with a sense of achievement.

Always review your brand and if you have a clear business model set out, review the brand to this. Don't become stuck with ideas, as your business must move with you and your times ad environments.

In order to make people look at your business and go,

Where your brand may come through:

The font that you use

The way that you market and advertise yourself

The colours and hues you use

The shapes you use

The psychology behind your ideas and visions

The people you choose to work with (though when starting out, be careful of this, don't be too fussy)

Your design structure from your website to your actual products

The way you present yourself when dealing with your business

The presence you have within the community (is your brand elusive or personable)?

The services you offer and how you offer them

There are so many more ways to utilise and develop your brand. These are just a few. But Milly J believes that if you know your brand, so will your customers and clients. Therefore, try not to get too many outside people to create the brand for you. As you know the vision better than they do. Though if you do choose to hire external help, communicate your ideas and visions effectively. Don't have people walking around with large question marks over their heads, or particularly over your products! Make sure your branding is tidy and consistent. If something tends to jump out at you and causes you to wince whilst reviewing the brand, chances are there is a problem with that particular area.
